A Wide Area Network or WAN is several connected Local Area Networks (LAN) or Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs). These networks span a large geographical area like a state or country. The networks that make up a WAN are often connected using public networks like telephone lines or fiber optic cables. The Internet is an example of a large, worldwide WAN.
